Addressing the Coming Health Care Worker Shortage
Surgeon General says better pay, less work, more support will help.
May 25th, 2022Burnout is a core factor contributing to a projected shortage of 3.2 million lower-wage health workers over the next five years, according to U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy. These include medical assistants, home health aides and nursing assistants, with New York and California being hardest hit. Worse, the shortages will also extend to doctors and nurses, with more than 500,000 registered nurses expected to retire by the end of the year. The shortage will also include physicians, particularly in primary care. Murthy offers some solutions.
