Is Your Doctor ‘Bright-Siding’ You?
Sugar-coating the truth about a serious condition serves no one
July 6th, 2023Physicians who sugar-coat the truth of a serious diagnosis do their patients no favors, according to the Washington Post’s Eve Glicksman. Also called “bright-siding,” such unsubstantiated reassurance from the doctor is well-meant, but it can rob the patient of important information needed now. Often, “it’s to avoid offending a patient or creating conflict, such as not suggesting to a parent that a child needs to lose weight. Or doctors may not have the heart to acknowledge themselves when a patient is declining, so you don’t get the message.”
