Time for a Little ‘Wilderness Therapy’

How a simple hike in the woods helps cancer patients during treatment

It’s long been true that outdoor activities like a hike in the woods can help improve one’s outlook on life in general, but now such “wilderness therapy” is found to be particularly helpful for cancer patients.  “Patients with cancer often face physical and emotional changes with a diagnosis and through subsequent treatment, which can impact self-esteem and self-confidence,” writes Melissa Celikoyar, a licensed clinical social worker, in Oncology Nursing News.  “Wilderness therapy can increase self-esteem by honing an individual’s ability to overcome physical challenges. This can help in building confidence and decreasing negative thought patterns.”
